Preparing for your Session

Duration: Newborn sessions can last up to four hours, depending on the baby. I’ll do my best to keep your little one settled and comfortable throughout the session. I recommend bringing something to pass the time, like a book or laptop, to stay occupied while I work with your baby. If you'd prefer to relax, feel free to take a nap—you're welcome to rest while I take care of everything.

Temperature: The room will be heated to a suitable temperature to ensure a comfortable environment for posing your baby. My studio is kept at a warmer temperature (75-78 degrees). Please dress accordingly, as it may be quite warm.

Nursing Moms: Be mindful of your diet for about a day leading up to our session. Spicy foods can cause discomfort for the baby and upset their tummy. A tummy ache often leads to tears and restlessness. So, steer clear of spicy foods and any items that could trigger allergies for the baby.

Keeping Baby Awake: If your baby has been sleeping for most of the morning before arriving for our session, they may stay awake for an extended period, making it harder to get them to sleep during our session. To help, try engaging with the baby—play with them, talk to them, or even give them a bath before our session. The goal is to keep them awake and alert for about 30 minutes to an hour beforehand.

Full Tummies: Please make sure your baby is fed and has a full tummy before leaving your home for our session. If you live more than 30 minutes from the studio, I would recommend arriving 20 minutes early to feed your baby. Please let me know if this is the case. If you bottle/formula feed, please bring some extra milk with you. Most babies need to eat multiple times during the session. Babies tend to eat more while being moved and worked with. Bring an extra bottle, or plan to nurse a little more.

Sleepwear: Please dress the baby in a button-up or zip-up sleeper and avoid onesies that go over the head. Loose-fitting onesies are preferred, as they are much easier to unzip and remove without disturbing the baby, helping them stay calm and settled. You don't need to bring anything for baby to wear unless you have something at home that you would like photographed. I have all of the props, outfits, headbands, etc. at the studio for baby.

Bring A Pacifier: If your baby uses a pacifier or you're willing to give one a try, please remember to bring it with you. Even if you don't typically use pacifiers this will be VERY helpful with soothing between shots and poses. This will allow for easy transition between poses. Babies aren’t used to being handled, posed, and moved around so much. It may take a while for them to settle.

Bring a Bottle: Please bring a bottle of expressed breastmilk or formula for your session if possible. This will allow me to comfort feed your baby during our session.

Sibling(s): Siblings are always welcome to join for the entire session. We’ll aim to capture the sibling photos at the beginning. Some parents prefer to take family portraits first and then have dad leave with the siblings, but the choice is entirely up to you!

Other Items: Diapers and wipes, toys and snacks if with other children.

What to Wear

For parents, choose something comfortable to wear. It’s so important for all of those cuddly newborn shots and you want to feel completely at-ease and comfortable in what you’re wearing during your session.

As stated previously, the room will be kept at a warmer temperature to ensure the baby’s comfort, so please dress accordingly. Feel free to bring your clothes to change into for the photos.

Try and coordinate your colors where possible - I always suggest selecting soft, neutral colors. These are timeless and classic. I recommend steering clear of bright colors, small patterns, and logos. The simpler, the better!

Don't stress about shoes. Most portraits with baby are taken from the waist up unless specifically requested otherwise.
